Week of December 4

Dear Parents

It’s hard to believe the end of the semester is just around the corner.  If your travel plans require that your child misses school, please let me know.  This information is useful for planning purposes.

Here’s a peek at our week ahead:
Monday (Day 2) Music and P.E.
Tuesday (Day 3) World Language
Wednesday (Day 4) Art and P.E.
Thursday (Day 5) Library and World Language
Friday (Day 6) Music and Swim Carnival

Reader’s Workshop
We continue our work focusing on author’s message.  Students will practice using the character’s actions and dialogue to help determine the author’s message.  This is complex work around reading comprehension, laying the basis for inferring from texts (or understanding what is not explicitly stated in texts).

Writer’s Workshop
As we finish up our unit on science lab reports, we turn our attention to poetry.  This is an opportunity for students to gain some exposure of writing a new genre.  We’ll begin to explore different forms of poetry and learn about some of the language that is common to poetry.

Science
Our science unit is coming to a close.  Students will review some of the major concepts covered in this unit to help them prepare for their final assessment.  We’ll look at specific science vocabulary as well and review the differences between physical and chemical changes.

Math Workshop
This week we continue to work on subtracting two 2-digit numbers.  Students will use various place value strategies to help them solve problems and explain their thinking.  We have been working on counting up and counting back on an open number line.  We will also spend part of our week reviewing skills that have been covered throughout the semester.

Dinner Questions
Tell me about your science experiment.  What were the results?
What is your favourite math game?  Why?
Tell me about a favourite book you read.
