Week of September 18

Dear Parents –

I hope you’re enjoying your weekend.   On Friday, students took home their Completed Work Folder.  This folder contains some work that your child has done in class.  Please keep the work at home and return the folder to school Monday.  Also, if your child has not decorated his or her Writer’s Notebook, please help them complete that soon and return it to school. 

We had a great Hari Raya Cultural Day on Friday.  You can view the pictures from the day on our Photos page. 

Our Mini Academies are the next big event happening in Grade 2.  Please consider volunteering to lead an activity.  If you have any questions about Mini Academies, please let me know.

Reader’s Workshop

This week we continue our work on how reader’s solve tricky words.  We’ll take a look at vowel digraphs and the different sounds that can be made by the vowel teams.  We will also begin working on strategies to fix-up our reading when we don’t understand part of the text.

Writer’s Workshop

We’re nearing the end of our second small moment story.  Our focus this week will be on magnifying small moments by adding details such as action, dialogue, and feelings.  Students will work with their writing partner to get feedback on their stories in order strengthen their writing.  The week will end with students using a checklist to revise and edit their stories before we move on to publishing.  

Social Studies

What does it mean to be a good citizen?  That is our focus question this week and students will explore how they can be good citizens at home, school, with friends, and in their community.  We’ll read books about respect, good manners, being polite, and about helping others.  This is a great opportunity for your children to look for ways they can help out at home and even in their neighborhood. 

Math

We continue our work on base-10 understanding by learning about the different ways to write numbers.  Students will practice writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, word form and by making a base-10 model.  We will also begin our work on comparing two 3-digit numbers.  Students will be asked to explain how they know that a number is larger, smaller or equal to another number.
